Across the world, people of many traditions will pause on Good Friday to reflect on sacrifice, compassion and the power of love to overcome darkness. Across traditions, the deepest stories remind us that courage often arises through devotion, service and love. At a time when global tensions and conflicts weigh heavily on the human spirit, gatherings that cultivate courage, humility and peace become especially meaningful.
Melbourne will host Australia’s first Hanuman Havan, 3 April 2026, a powerful gathering of devotion and collective prayer organised by Chinmaya Mission Melbourne as part of the Mission’s 75th anniversary celebrations worldwide.
Founded in 1953 by Swami Chinmayananda, Chinmaya Mission is a global spiritual, educational and charitable organisation dedicated to the teachings of Vedanta — the science of self-knowledge — combined with service to society. Its guiding vision is simple yet profound: “Maximum Happiness to Maximum People.”
Hanuman: Courage, Devotion and the Power of the Human Heart

In the great Indian epic Ramayana, Hanuman is a being of immense strength. Yet he is remembered not for his power but for his humility and love for Rama and Sita. Tradition tells that Rama and Sita dwell in Hanuman’s heart.
True strength arises when love lives at the centre of the heart.
For millions of devotees, the Hanuman Chalisa, the beloved 40-verse hymn composed by the saint Tulsidas, is far more than a song. It is a spiritual practice believed to cultivate courage, dissolve fear, remove obstacles and inspire strength in difficult times.
The Peace of Ram
In Sanskrit there is a beautiful devotional expression: Shanta-Ram — “the peace of Ram” or “the serene presence of Ram.” In its deeper sense, the phrase points toward something timeless: the quiet peace that arises when the heart rests in the divine, and the divine in the heart. In the stories of Hanuman, this peace is not abstract. It lives in his devotion to Sita and Ram — their name “SitaRam” constantly on his lips and alive in his heart. In a sense, this living devotion is the kernel of the kernel — the innermost essence of spiritual life. Beneath rituals, traditions and teachings lies something simple and universal: the awakening of love, courage and service within the human heart.
A Powerful Collective Chant
• 108 sacred fire altars (Havan Kunds) • Thousands of voices chanting the Hanuman Chalisa • The hymn repeated 21 times
The ceremony will take place 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, guided by the Chinmaya Mission community under the divine presence and blessings of Global Head, Pujya Swami Swaroopanandaji.
A Celebration for Everyone
Cultural performances • Kids activities • Indian food stalls • A vibrant community gathering. People from all backgrounds are welcome — whether deeply connected to yoga and bhakti traditions or simply curious to experience a powerful moment of devotion, culture and community.
A Prayer for Peace
Across cultures and traditions, humanity has always gathered in times of uncertainty to pray for the welfare of all beings. The story of Hanuman reminds us that courage often arises not from certainty, but from devotion to what is right. When the heart holds love at its centre, strength follows.
