Tour Description (7 days)
Day 1: Fri 21st Oct 2016
QUEENSTOWN TO MOUNT COOK - Mt Cook Excursion
This morning drive through the rugged Kawarau Gorge to Cromwell and then along the shores of Lake Dunstan. Journey across the stunning Lindis Pass and onto the small settlements of Omarama and Twizel. Follow the shoreline of Lake Pukaki to reach the Mount Cook National Park.
New Zealand’s highest mountain, Mount Cook (Aoraki in Māori) towers 3,724 metres into the sky, providing a stunning backdrop to the beautiful Mount Cook National Park in the centre of the South Island. Declared a World Heritage park in 1986, it boasts over thirty peaks 3,000 metres or higher. It also has five of New Zealand’s largest glaciers, including the Tasman Glacier at 21km in length. The region is also renowned for its clear, starry nights and was designated a Dark Sky Reserve in 2012 – the first in the southern hemisphere and the world’s largest, encompassing a 4300 km2 area.
Aoraki is also one of the twelve major nodes on the planet and represents one of the LEMURIAN homes of our ancestors. We are there to immerse ourselves within the sacred energy of this place and connect with the deep wisdom of the land.
Enjoy lunch in the Alpine Restaurant at the iconic Hermitage Hotel, with time to see an inspiring short film titled Mount Cook Magic in 3D. The movie begins with the Maori legend about the creation of New Zealand, then hold tight as you experience soaring above the mountains, accompanying a climbing expedition and skiing the Tasman Glacier.
After lunch there will be a short ceremony outside (weather permitting) with Kahuna Kalei, followed by a Kryon channel.
Guests overnighting in Mount Cook can join a guided walk in the Hooker Valley. The Hooker Valley provides breath-taking views of some of New Zealand’s highest and most enthralling peaks. Your knowledgeable guide will tell you about the unique flora and fauna of the region and the local history as you trek through this amazing landscape. This is a 7km walk along a well maintained track. Dinner in the hotel tonight for overnighting guests.
Day 2: Sat 22nd Oct 2016
MOUNT COOK TO CHRISTCHURCH
Depart from Mount Cook returning along the shores of Lake Pukaki. Turning eastward you will reach another picturesque alpine lake, Tekapo, with its turquoise waters fed straight from glaciers. Stop at the Church of the Good Shepard for stunning views across the lake. Weather permitting we will have a Kryon channel along the shoreline of Lake Tekapo. Begin your descent from the Southern Alps into the Canterbury Plains crossing the Rakaia River to reach Christchurch.
Tonight we will visit the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve and Ko Tane, a living Maori Village. Here Maori culture and conservation meet to give a unique glimpse into the way of life of the South Island Ngai Tahu people. Experience the traditional challenge and welcome given to visitors, learn about the customs of the Ngai Tahu and witness an ancient way of life where Maori struggled to survive in the harsh conditions of the most southerly of the Polynesian Pacific Islands. Enjoy a cultural performance showcasing the haka, poi dance, songs and games. End your evening with a traditional hangi meal, where the food is cooked underground from stones heated in a fire pit.
Day 3: Sun 23rd Oct 2016
CHRISTCHURCH TO GREYMOUTH AND PUNAKAIKI
Climb aboard the TranzAlpine train, one of the world’s most famous train journeys, between Christchurch and Greymouth. Cross the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, and enjoy thrilling vistas over deep gorges as you travel alongside the ice-fed Waimakariri River. Traverse the mighty Southern Alps, where spectacular views of the chiseled alpine landscape will take your breath away at every turn. Descend through thick stands of native beech forest to your destination, Greymouth. Enjoy a light lunch onboard the train.
From Greymouth we travel north to see the famous Punakaiki pancake rocks. Nowhere is the ocean's effect on the landscape more spectacular than here. Experience the magnificent power of the ocean as it blasts sea spray high out of the Punakaiki blowholes. Return to Greymouth for the night.
